The General Assembly (GA) is the main deliberative and policymaking organ of the United Nations and is composed of 193 Member-States. The middle of September of each year marks the beginning of a new GA Session, which lasts until the middle of September the following year. On 18 September 2012, the 67th Session of the GA began, which was soon followed by the annual General Debate, held from 25 September through October 1, 2012.

The General Debate is the time for Heads of State and Government to express their views on the most pressing international issues. The President of the 67th Session, Mr. Vuk Jeremić of Serbia, has chosen as theme for the General Debate: “Adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations by peaceful means.”

Most statements can be found on the website of the General Debate of the UN General Assembly. To read the opening statement by the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, please click here (available in all six UN languages).
