The MDGs through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching

Caritas Internationalis and the JPIC Promoters (Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation) in Rome have produced a new publication entitled Breaking with Business as Usual: Achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

What is different about this handy, easily accessible and clear, 29-page booklet is that it looks at the MDGs from the perspective of Catholic Social Teaching using the theological reflection tool ‘See – Judge - Act.’ The booklet is divided into three sections. Section One - ‘See’ - introduces the MDGs, what they are, where, when and why they came to be. This part also discusses each individual goal, giving some relevant statistics. Section Two - ‘Judge’ - explains the basics about Catholic Social Teaching and how these relate to the MDGs. Section Three - ‘Act’ - provides concrete suggestions of how we, as Gospel people, can get involved, participate, support, promote, help, connect, denounce, lobby and advocate for the MDGs. Each section ends with a few suggestions for group reflection. The booklet concludes with an MDG prayer and some useful lists of resources on-line.

This booklet is useful in many educational settings and can be found at www.caritas.org
